I’m a huge fan of How I Built This….and I’ll profile them one day soon. But one thing that HIBT this does NOT feature are small business owners. I mean, they kinda do at the end of each episode, but it’s more like a big brother patting his kid brother on the head for successfully selling $10 worth of lemonade. Not that they’re condescending, because they aren’t. I guess all I mean is that the small business owners are not the feature of the show. So what HIBT lacks, The Side Hustle Show has in spades. Every episode features a different “side hustler”. And despite the show’s name, there are plenty of stories of people who have successfully converted their side hustle into a full time gig. And that’s why I love this show. It’s not about the guy who founded the brand that is so ubiquitous that it’s a household name (unrelated tangent: there is actually a show called “Household Name” which is very entertaining….will cover that one too in an upcoming episode). It’s about people like you and me. The episode I listened to today is a great example. Until today, I had never heard of him, but Rob “The Flea Market” Flipper Stephenson (click on the link below to hear the episode) makes 6-figures flipping random stuff. When you listen to Rob talk about what he does, the enthusiasm cascades upon you like one of those chocolate fountains. Rob is not an Ivy League grad with an Masters in Computer Science. Rob is a hustler. Not a hustler, as in he swindles people. Rob is willing to work for money. He could be you or me. Just an ordinary guy who is willing to put the time and effort into doing something that he really enjoys. Not content with just being a flipper, Rob posts videos to youtube about how he does what he does, started selling online courses, and is building a community around this type business.
Side Hustle Nation is the brain child of Nick Loper. Nick is himself an entrepreneur to be emulated. In many respects, my discovery of Side Hustle Nation was what inspired me to fully commit to making the Cool Idea! Podcast a success. On the side hustle nation website, Nick posts all sorts of cool tidbits from each episode, various personal finance topics, and even publishes a quarterly progress report about the state of his podcast. In addition to there being plenty of useful info, Nick’s website is downright interesting. On more than one occasion I’ve gone down a rabbit hole on his website, only to blink and realize an hour has gone by.
If you are looking to get inspired to start your own side hustle, look no further than Side Hustle Nation. Who knows, maybe one day Nick will come calling and ask you to tell your story on his show!
